The Ministry of the National Heritage and Culture established (pursuant to MD 7 February 2003) the “Edizione Nazionale degli Antichi Volgarizzamenti dei testi latini nei volgari italiani” (National Edition of Ancient Translations of Latin Texts into Italian Vernaculars) as part of a broader Project aimed at describing the Return of classics to Humanism.
General information is scarce, and critically-updated editions of Italian translations of the classics from the late Medieval and humanistic ages are very few: a valuable legacy that directly concerns the success of Virgil and Cicero, of Ovid and Livy, in other words authors who played a key role in the spreading of classical culture and the very idea of classicism in the Romance Middle Ages. Therefore, this «Edizione nazionale» (National Edition), as its own specific, unique contribution, would like to promote the study of the tradition and publish a critical edition of the translations of the classics into ancient Italian vernaculars.
